A new solventless method for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical ureas, starting from ethylene carbonate and amines, is reported. 1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene(TBD) and thioureas have been found to be efficient organocatalysts for this reaction.
Disubstituted and trisubstituted ureas were synthesized from ethylene carbonate and amines under solventless conditions using organic bases as catalysts.

In this study, we attempted to increase the fluorescence quantum yield of pyrromethene-BF2 complex (BODIPY) in the solid state by introducing bulky groups as substituents at the boron atom. Although the BF2 complex did not exhibit any fluorescence in the solid state (ϕf = 0.00), the B(OMe)2, B(OPh)2, and BPh2 complexes did show solid-state fluorescence with quantum yields of 0.02, 0.04, and 0.22, respectively.

Open the bridge: A [2]catenane has been synthesized around a salt-bridge template (see picture). Addition and sequestration of Zn2+ or variation of the pH value can reversibly trigger the formation and rupture of the salt bridge, thus inducing a major reorganization within the molecule. Suggestions as to the use of such systems as molecular logic gates or nanomechanical devices are made.

Researchers discover proton diode

Biophysicists in Bochum have discovered a diode for protons: just like the electronic component determines the direction of flow of electric current, the "proton diode" ensures that protons can only pass through a cell membrane in one direction. Water molecules play an important role here as active components of the diode.
